Learn new skills have hobbies that require both manual dexterity and mental effort such as learning a new language, learning a new musical instrument, painting and playing table-tennis. Scientists have found that these activities stimulate new connections between nerve cells and may even help the brain generate new cells, developing neurological "plasticity" and building up a functional reserve that provides a hedge against future cell loss. Avoid passively watching too much of television on its own as this does little to stimulate your brain and research has shown that this is associated with cognitive decline on the long term.
Try to incorporate mindfulness exercises into your daily life which helps to stimulate your brain. Practicing mindfulness has been shown scientifically to increase neural connections in your brain resulting in many positive outcomes such as increased focus and attention, increased positive emotions, reduced negative emotions and reduced risk of cognitive decline.
